catrines, catrinas
& alebrijes

Artisanal laboratory and courses | Magic and Art in cardboard | Once a piece has begun you must complete in full because if it is not it will appear in your dreams and will not let you rest until you finish and baptise it | A Catrín, Catrina o Alebrije must have a proper name | When finishing the piece you must leave a day and when you see it again you should baptize it with the first name that comes to your mind regardless of whatever or if it makes any sense | The size of a alebrije at its ”birth" depends on the first stroke of your hand | You must make the stroke of the wings without thinking about the proportions and the size of the alebrije will depend on the size of the wings

The Artist

Hello, my name is Isabel, I was born on April 19, 1978 in the city of Puebla in Mexico.

I began my studies of Hispanic Literature at the BUAP (State University of Puebla) in the year 1996, during my studies I attended exhibitions dedicated to the diffusion of Mexican art and traditions, so I discovered my love for the cardboard crafting tradition.

During 2006-2007 I continued my studies with a prominent “cartonero” (cardboard artist)  of the city of Puebla, Carlos Navarro who in turn was student of the Linares family.

Currently I am also a member of the artisans group IAIP.

My Creation

I have created and developed “LA CATRINERÍA”,
a project dedicated to the diffusion of the art of “cartonería”, the Mexican cardboard crafting.

  • I sell of pieces elaborated with this technique
  • I delivery courses to the general public for the knowing and learning of the art of cardboard crafting.

Achievements

Some of the well-known institutions where I have given courses are the following:

  • Workshop of Catrinas for the Day of the Dead for seniors “Margarita Maza de Juárez” DIF. (2007)
  • Workshop of Catrinas for people with different capacities at the Jean Piaget Institute in Puebla. (2007)
  • Workshop of Catrinas and Alebrijes in the Children’s Circle of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla. (2007 and 2008)
  • Cardboard crafting workshops at the Institute of Handicrafts and Popular Industries of Puebla (IAIP) (2007 – 2010)

My experience as an exhibitor is as follows:

  • I have been an exhibitor in the offerings of the House of Culture of Puebla (2007 and 2008)
  • I have exposed, by request, pieces of cartonería in the municipal PRI, on the occasion of the Day of the Dead (2008 and 2009)
